The strip mall dining scene in greater Phoenix got even better with newly opened restaurants adding Filipino barbecue, Bangkok street food and Chesapeake Bay blue crabs to the menu. 

Two of the venues let you get up close and personal with your food. In Phoenix, grill your own Filipino barbecue skewers over a repurposed Korean barbecue grill. And in Ahwatukee, crack into steamed Maryland crab flow in fresh from the Chesapeake Bay.

Chino Bandido outgrows its original Phoenix location after 30 years

On opening weekend in early July, Chino Bandido was an indoor amusement park of jerk chicken and Chinese burritos. The masses crowding into the restaurant’s new location formed a roller coaster of a line that weaved into tighter and tighter circles.

I wound my way past lime green walls and TVs playing Guy Fieri, and even after spending half an hour in line, I still found it difficult to navigate the dizzying array of food options. 

“Would you like plain fried rice, pork fried rice, chicken fried rice or jerk fried rice?” asked the person behind the counter.

Chino Bandido opens July 8 at its new home in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Chino Bandido, a restaurant known for its combinations of Chinese, Jamaican, and Mexican flavors and that was featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, opens Thursday, July 8, at its new spot in Phoenix.

For 31 years, the hole-in-the-wall joint had been located in a strip mall near 19th Avenue and Greenway Road. It will now be located two miles up the road at Bell Road and Third Avenue, near the WinCo grocery store.

Guy Fieri opens 3 Flavortown restaurants for delivery in metro Phoenix

If you got the munchies for overstuffed burgers and bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers, you’ve got a new takeout option: Celebrity chef Guy Fieri has launched a nationwide chain of Flavortown ghost kitchens — and three of those takeout restaurants open Friday in metro Phoenix.

Fieri has graced the Valley on numerous occasions for his Food Network series “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
