A señora greets you and lets you get a taste of her fresh made tortillas or menudo to make sure the flavor is right.
“Tienes hambre?” she asks, because grandmas always make sure you have a full belly.
When you step through the doors of La Toxica, familiar scents of chicken tortas, pastor taco meat and charro beans can make you forget it’s not abuela’s house.
Yazmin Ramirez and her mom Lydia Ramirez opened their restaurant Jan. 9, 2021 at 2323 Ben Ficklin Road serving authentic Mexican food in San Angelo. La Toxica only serves to-go orders due to COVID-19 and building capacity limitations.
At first, the two served hotdogs with various toppings including bacon, chili, cheese, onions, peppers, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, taco meat and more.
Every week of operation, more items have been added to the menu such as tortas, gorditas, tacos, charro beans, menudo and tortillas.
“We make all the food here,” Yazmin said. “None of it is store bought, it’s all authentic. It’s as if you’re walking into your mom or grandma’s house and they’re cooking for you.”

The Ramirez’s said this food is common where they are from, but you don’t see it in West Texas towns like San Angelo.
This is where the name: La Toxica comes into play.
“It’s unique name for unique food,” Yazmin said. “Toxica is a person in a relationship that can be so toxic to the other person that they become addictive. That’s my food… you want it, you think about it, you keep coming back.”
La Toxica will have a grand opening Feb. 28, 2021 from noon-4 p.m. serving breakfast and lunch.
“It’ll be a like big Mexican carne asada party your family would throw,” Yazmin said.
The restaurant is open from 4-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday and Sunday.
