PETALING JAYA, Nov 29 — When it comes to wallet-friendly meals, I often have to rack my brains to think of a place.

With the opening of Muse by Gest last week, this will be my go-to spot for eggs Benedict with bacon or the classic French dish of chicken confit paired with puy lentils. If I crave rice, they also make a pan fried Iberico pork patty with Japanese Nishiki rice.

Soul food coming to the Maine Mall

Shoppers at the Maine Mall in South Portland are used to grabbing a burger, a smoothie or a chocolate chip cookie at the food court. Soon they’ll be able to sit down with a plate full of fried chicken, collard greens, mac-and-cheese and corn bread, then finish up with peach cobbler.

The owner of Soul Food Paradise, a Portland takeout restaurant now operating out of Fork Food Lab in Portland, has signed a three-year lease with the Maine Mall food court and will be moving his business into the spot formerly occupied by national chain Arby’s.

It was the early 2010s, and Tae Yoon’s parents’ business was struggling. So the young chef left his job cooking at Fig at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica to return to Vallejo, where his parents ran Louisiana Fish & Chips in a strip mall on Tennessee Street. 

Immigrants from Korea, Yuh Il Yoon and Jong Ran Park purchased the restaurant in the early 2000s. It had succeeded for a time, but with the 2009 financial crisis and recession, the restaurant, which sold fish and chips and burritos, was floundering.
